The Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) is the major public university in Mozambique with about 12000 students. It is comprised of about 17 Bodies, 11 Faculties and 10 Centers. The Center for Informatics of the UEM (CIUEM) is the institution which aim is to provide ICT support to the whole University, Government Departments, and to the private sector. It provides, among others services, Internet access (ISP), Data recovering in HDDs, Internet/Intranet services administration, and IT- Security consulting.

Security Assessment for the UEM Netwoks using Open Source Tools

    Field of Application
  • Eduardo Mondlane University, including CIUEM
  • Governmental institutions
  • Private and public companies

    Technology
  • Operating systems: Debian GNU/Linux
  • Applications: ISP Services, Network Security Assessment Tools, etc.
Basic
concept

For the past years of its operation, the CIUEM has deployed many systems throughout the country. Back then, the level of security of those systems wasn't a big concern for our clients. Nowadays, given the increasing number of IT literates in the country and also the reliance of many of our clients systems on the Internet, the security threats are becoming major concerns.

Detailed Description

One of the early steps in deploying security mechanisms in your system, is the ability of scanning your networks for secuity holes.

The project is about collecting the tools necessary to perform network assessment for security holes. Network security is a very large topic, and it consists of physical security, technology (firewalls, IDS, IPS, patching of the systems and applications, etc.), and also on the behaviour of the users.

The aim of the project is to identify and collect the tools needed to perform network security scanning. This tools will allow network administrators to scan a wide range of network services from one centralised point. After this scan, a report should be compiled and security measurements should follow.

„The Internet is a very funny place to be, however it is no longer a safe. The worse nightmare of a system administrators is the fear of being visited by the bad guys. This project will allow system administrators and security engineers to pentest their networks, and close the doors before the bad guys pays them a visit. Go hack yourself before the bad guys do!"
